Silent injuries after an accident can have severe consequences

After a car accident, you may want to get home and get some rest. Even though the crash was pretty bad, you do not feel hurt.

Some injuries do not manifest as severe pain immediately following a crash. It is important to spot the signs of these silent injuries. Failing to get medical help after an accident may result in permanent consequences.

Brain injury

Traumatic brain injury is a silent killer, and sometimes, the signs do not always manifest as you would think. Your brain is sensitive, and as such, it can easily sustain an injury from the rapid force an accident can impose on the neck and head. The signs of an underlying brain injury may include:

  • Intense headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Change in personality
  • Difficulty moving

Traumatic brain injury consequences range from little residual damage to severely limiting.

Back injury

Your back may have felt a little off since the day of the accident, but nothing too severe. The lower back, especially, can sustain an injury without much physical manifestation in the days or weeks following a crash. However, if your pain returns suddenly and the intensity is off the pain chart, you may have herniated a disc or cracked a vertebra. One of the worst things you can do is ignore back pain an accident. Continued physical activity will only aggravate it and may eventually cause a catastrophic consequence, such as paralysis.

It is important that you visit a doctor or clinic following a vehicle crash to ensure you do not have an underlying injury. Failing to do so may impact your life for years to come.
